In the once peaceful land of Mistral, legend holds of a brave knight named Drak who has sealed an evil god named Deoric beneath the six continents of the land. However, peace never lasts… The Garuda Empire has invaded the lands of Mistral, and the Six Generals, led by Sombul, have conquered the continents. Sombul's ambition: to resurrect Deoric and plunge the land into chaos. Duran, descendant of Drak, is the only one who can stop the Garuda Empire's mad plan, and with the power of Drak's mystic armors, he heads off to stop Sombul at any cost. www.Mobygames.com

The usual one man against the endless forces of the enemy, fighting through a level to dispatch the boss character formula is present and well executed in this classic scrolling shooter from Hudson Soft. Thankfully damage eats away at a life bar rather than the more usual for the genre one-hit death which alleviates a lot of the frustration normally associated with 2D shooters. Minor RPG-style elements are also present and add some variety - one of four elemental suits of armour can be chosen for each level, and before each level (and after continuing) players can visit a shop to buy power-ups and even continues using credits obtained from defeating enemies. The armours each have different attacking styles, which also vary according to the number of power-ups collected, and whilst any level can be completed with any equipment, choosing the right armour can give you a slight edge. The six levels can be taken on in any order which prevents you from getting stuck at a certain point, but it does mean that there's no real learning curve as all the levels seem set at pretty much the same difficulty. The graphics aren't stunning but everything is fast and well animated, and the game tends to move at such a pace that you don't have time to notice the slight lack of detail. A rock soundtrack suits the action and along with a scattering of speech almost covers up the slightly disappointing sound effects. This is one of the rarer titles for the Mega-CD as it appeared late in the console's life, although sealed copies do turn up on eBay UK every now and then. If you're not an arcade shooter fan then this won't convert you (but then again nothing will), but for those who want to sit down and experience some of the best twitch gaming this is a must-have. www.sega-mega-cd-library.co.uk
