The good old 3-d glasses. As good a retro-peripheral as they were, there were only a handful of games released for them. This meant that in order to get your value from the cool specs you felt that you had to practically buy every game. Which is why I ended up with Zaxxon 3d. I'd never played the coin-op and wasn't overly inspired with the screenshots on the box. I bought it because I had to because, well, it’s was 3D!!! But was it any good? Obviously I'm now familiar with the arcade game. The first thing to mention is that it is not really a direct conversion. The arcade game was an early isometric 3D shooter. In order to make more use of the 3D glasses, the game is now fully 3D with your ship flying into the screen. Each stage is basically split into three parts. First you have to negotiate your way through a wave of enemy fighters that fly towards you. Then you enter the enemy base. Here tanks, walls, rockets and forcefields all block your path. You also need to keep an eye on your ever-depleting fuel gauge. This can be topped up by shooting fuel canisters in the base. Finally you meet the end of level boss. Once he's defeated you move on to the next round which is roughly more of the same but a bit more difficult. The main problem with the gameplay of Zaxxon is that it is very slow paced. Whereas the arcade game was quick moving, the Master System game is quite mundane. The first wave of fighters is very easy on every round and destroying them is pretty dull. The bosses are also easy with little variation. The only real excitement is in the enemy base. At least in here the game gives you some sort of buzz. Frustratingly most of my lives were lost on the force fields which you need to fly through. This wasn't because of any great difficulty but purely because of the graphics. Which leads me on to. […] If you do have the glasses and haven't got Zaxxon 3D then I suppose it is worth finding it just to get it in your collection. However Zaxxon 3D is not great. It's not even good. It's a slow, mediocre 3D shooter that could and should have been done much better. It seems to me that in order to show off the 3D glasses, the programmers have let the general graphics and gameplay go to waste. Overall it's not a game I would recommend. (Although it is worth popping in just to hear that funky music when you first start round one!) - www.SMStributes.co.uk

Zaxxon is back, and the 3D effect is no joke! Unlike the original arcade hit which had an isometric viewing angle, Zaxxon 3D displays the action straight on - much like the Atari 2600 version. The third dimension adds a new level of excitement as you drop down into trenches while blowing up fuel depots. The deep space stages that were so mediocre in the original game are impressive as hell here. It's no longer hard to determine if you're „lined up“ with enemies, as you can clearly see your shots whizzing over or under ships on the horizon. Zaxxon 3D has the added feature of being able to toggle your weapon. At first I couldn't tell the difference, but eventually I realized my second weapon fired more rapidly at the cost of faster fuel consumption. It's a neat wrinkle that adds a little strategy. As usual, I did find a few flaws. Objects in the foreground (including your ship) lend themselves to double vision, although objects scaling in from the distance look fantastic. The bosses are dull, the music is annoying, and platform stages could have benefitted from a little more detail. Still, the game is a blast to play. If you're lucky enough to own the Sega 3D glasses, this game belongs in your collection. And yes, you do look like a complete dork wearing those things! - www.Videogamecritic.com
